Why Glass Door Bar Fridges Fog Up (And How to Stop It)

A glass door bar fridge fogs up when the outside surface of the glass drops below the dew point of the air around it. Warm, humid air touches cold glass, the moisture in that air condenses, and you get a foggy door, water beads, and eventually a puddle on the floor. It is not a fault. It is physics, and it happens to every glass door fridge under the right conditions.

A heated glass door fixes it by running a thin, transparent element inside the door that keeps the outer pane a few degrees above dew point. The moisture never gets a cold surface to condense on, so the glass stays clear.

Why your glass door fogs up

Air holds water vapour. How much it can hold depends on its temperature — warm air holds a lot, cold air holds very little. The dew point is the temperature at which the air you're standing in becomes saturated, and any surface colder than that starts pulling water out of the air.

A bar fridge door is a cold surface by definition. On a mild, dry day the dew point is low, the glass sits above it, and nothing happens. On a hot, humid afternoon the dew point climbs — and once it climbs past the temperature of your fridge door, the glass fogs. Same fridge, same setting, different weather.

This is also why the fogging is on the outside of the door. Condensation forming inside the cabinet is a different problem, usually a door seal that isn't sealing or a door being opened repeatedly in humid air.

Why Australian alfresco areas are the worst case

An outdoor entertaining area stacks every factor against a glass door at once:

  • Humidity you can't control. An air-conditioned kitchen is dehumidified as a side effect of cooling. A covered patio is not — it sits at whatever the weather is doing.
  • Higher ambient temperature. The fridge works harder, runs its compressor longer, and holds the glass colder for longer stretches.
  • The worst timing. Peak humidity and peak entertaining are the same afternoons. The door fogs precisely when you have people over and want the drinks on display.
  • Door traffic. Every time the door opens, a slug of warm, humid air meets the cold interior and the glass.

Queensland and northern NSW summers are the obvious case, but a humid Melbourne or Perth evening after rain will do it too. If your fridge lives outside the air conditioning, this is a question of when, not if.

What doesn't fix it

Most of the advice you'll find online treats the symptom:

  • Wiping the door. Works for about ninety seconds. The conditions that caused it haven't changed.
  • Turning the fridge colder. This makes it worse, not better. A colder cabinet means colder glass, which means the glass sits further below dew point. You also pay for the extra cooling.
  • Anti-fog sprays and coatings. These change how the water sits on the glass — they can spread it into a film instead of beads. The water is still there.
  • A fan pointed at the door. Moving air over the glass helps a little by breaking up the boundary layer, but on a genuinely humid day it's a losing fight.
  • Moving to a solid door. This does solve condensation, and if you don't care about seeing the contents it's the cheaper answer. We've covered the full trade-off in glass door vs solid door bar fridges.

The only fix that addresses the cause is keeping the glass above dew point.

What heated glass actually does

A heated glass door has a transparent conductive element laminated into the door panel. It draws power and warms the outer pane just enough to sit above the dew point of the surrounding air. Because it targets the glass surface rather than the cabinet, it doesn't fight the compressor or warm your drinks.

Most units running heated glass also use double or triple glazing, so the element only has to hold the outer pane — the insulating gap does the rest of the work. There's a second approach worth knowing about too: the Rhino SGT1L-BS uses Low-E, argon-filled dual-glazed doors to minimise condensation in the first place, and adds an electrically heated frame rather than a heated pane. It's the lowest-consumption unit in the whole table below at 1.14 kWh/24h.

What heated glass does not do: make a fridge weatherproof. It solves condensation. Rain, salt air and direct sun are separate questions about where a fridge is rated to live — and that's what the ENVY range further down is for.

Do you actually need it?

An honest answer, because heated glass carries a price premium and plenty of people don't need it.

You probably don't need it if the fridge is going in an air-conditioned kitchen, a home office, a bedroom, or an indoor bar in a temperate climate. Conditioned air is dry air. A standard glass door will be clear almost all the time.

You probably do need it if the fridge is going in a covered alfresco area, an outdoor kitchen, a poolside bar, an unconditioned garage or shed, or any commercial venue where the doors open constantly and the drinks need to stay visible.

The middle case is a garage or rumpus room that gets humid a few weeks a year. That's exactly where a switchable heated door earns its keep — more on that next.

What does the heating element actually cost to run?

This is the question people actually ask, and most retailers dodge it. Rhino publishes the number, and it's worth knowing before you buy.

On the Rhino ENVY range, the quoted power consumption is measured with the heated glass switched off. Rhino's own specification states the element adds 1.5 kWh per 24 hours on the 148L ENV1, and 1.6 kWh on the 248L ENV2H. At roughly 26c per kWh that's about $140–$150 a year on top of the base figure — on the ENV1, it lifts running cost from $218 to somewhere near $360.

So heated glass is not free. Anyone telling you the element is negligible is guessing.

The important detail is that on the ENVY range it's switchable. You run it during the humid months and turn it off the rest of the year, which is what makes the maths work — you're paying for condensation control on the twenty or thirty days that actually need it, not for all 365.

Schmick doesn't break the element out as a separate figure, so treat the consumption in the table as the whole unit as specified. And note what the ranking shows: the spread across the range runs from 1.14 to 5.16 kWh/24h, and it tracks capacity, glazing and target temperature far more closely than it tracks whether a door is heated. A 121L SK116 with a heated door runs 1.20 kWh. A 190L SK190 runs 4.10 kWh. Both have heated glass.

The entry point: Schmick SK86-B-HD, 89L

If you want heated glass and nothing more, the 89L SK86L-B-HD is the cheapest way into it at $994.65. It's front-venting, so it can go under a bench, runs at 43dB, and at 1.22 kWh/24h sits among the lowest-consumption units in the entire heated range. Available in left and right hinge, black or stainless.

The covered-alfresco pick: Schmick HUS-EX108, 108L

The Schmick HUS-EX108 is the one we'd point most people at for a covered alfresco, and it's the model in the photographs on this page — those are real customer installations, not studio shots.

It's a 108L single-door unit in black with a heated, tempered glass door, LED interior lighting and a touchscreen control panel. It's lockable, sits on adjustable feet, and measures 560 × 500 × 845 mm, which drops it under a standard benchtop. Noise is 45dB. It uses R600a refrigerant and carries SAA electrical and EMC (C-Tick) certification.

What makes it unusual is temperature. Schmick specifies a Party Mode holding a continuous −5 °C, and a Turbo Chill mode running −5 °C for an hour — sub-zero territory, where most bar fridges are built to hold somewhere between 0 °C and 10 °C. It's specified to reach that in ambient temperatures up to 38 °C.

That capability is why its running cost sits higher than similarly sized units at 2.37 kWh/24h, or about $222 a year. Holding a cabinet below zero costs more than holding it at four degrees. If you don't need sub-zero, the SK86 or SK116 will chill your drinks for roughly half that.

One thing to get right before you buy it: Schmick specifies the EX108 for indoor or enclosed outdoor use, and explicitly not for direct sunlight exposure. It's an alfresco fridge in the sense of a covered patio, outdoor kitchen or verandah — not an exposed poolside deck. It also needs 100 mm clearance at the rear and 30 mm at the sides and top, so it's a freestanding unit rather than one to build flush into cabinetry.

If your space is genuinely exposed, you want the ENVY range instead.

The exposed-and-coastal option: the Rhino ENVY range

The ENVY range is what Rhino builds for the conditions the Schmick units aren't rated for. Three things separate it:

  • 316 marine-grade stainless steel throughout body and grill — the grade specified for rust prevention in coastal environments, not the 304 used on most indoor fridges.
  • Switchable heated glass, so you control when you're paying for condensation control rather than running it year-round.
  • A Japanese Secop variable-speed inverter compressor, which Rhino rates at around 25% energy saving over a conventional compressor, and specifies for ambient temperatures above 43 °C.

All three carry a 2-year warranty — double the EX108's — and all three are lockable, under-counter units at 575 mm depth and 840 mm high.

The honest framing: ENVY costs two to four times what the Schmick heated units cost, and for a covered patio that premium buys you very little. It's the right answer when the fridge is near salt air, in an uncovered outdoor kitchen, or somewhere the ambient regularly runs past what a standard unit is rated for. Commercial upright glass-door freezers are excluded — they carry heated glass but are a different category, and their consumption (13–26 kWh/24h) would distort the ranking. Branded and licensed wrapped editions are excluded too: they're the same chassis as a model already listed, so including them would double-count. One model, the SK220, is held back pending a specification check.

Frequently asked questions

Is condensation on a bar fridge normal?
On the outside of a glass door, yes — it means the glass is colder than the dew point of the air around it, which is ordinary physics rather than a fault. Condensation inside the cabinet is different and usually points to a door seal not sealing properly.

How do I stop condensation on glass fridge doors?
Permanently, only by keeping the glass above dew point — which means a heated glass door — or by reducing the humidity of the room, which is not an option in an outdoor area. Wiping, anti-fog sprays and turning the fridge colder all treat the symptom, and the last one makes it worse.

Does a heated glass door use a lot of power?

No, and the two are unrelated. Heated glass solves condensation. Whether a fridge can handle rain, salt air or direct sun is a separate specification — the Rhino ENVY range is the one built in 316 marine-grade stainless for exposed and coastal positions.

Can I just buy a solid door instead?
Yes, and it's cheaper. A solid door has no condensation problem because there's no cold glass on show. The trade-off is that you can't see what's inside, which matters more in a commercial venue or an entertaining area than it does in a garage.
